Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are sexually assaulted at a rate seven times higher than people without disabilities. Among women with intellectual disabilities, it is about 12 times the rate (NPR, 2018). One study estimates 32% of men and 83% of women with intellectual and or developmental disabilities (I/DD) will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime (Johnson, Sigler 2000). These are astounding rates. The YWCA is dedicated to preventing sexual assault of individuals with I/DD and supporting sexual assault survivors who have disabilities.”
