The YWCA has long been unique in creating a space where women of color and white women could work alongside one another to improve the lives of all women. With that as our backdrop, we celebrated our history, including recollections from the women who were instrumental in the creation of the YWCA One Imperative – YWCA associations’ racial justice touchstone. We were joined by nationally recognized leaders in diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts – Denise Hamilton and Jenna Arnold. Their personal friendship and professional collaboration revealed the role women play in anti-racism work. Attendees left inspired, energized, and equipped with the tools needed to help move our community forward.

Our mission statement is clear – empowering all women requires an end to racism. This video details the effort that was undertaken to ensure passage of the One Imperative at the YWCA national convention in 1970. It built on long-held interracial ideals while seeking to also address the deep racial inequities within our own organization.

The One Imperative

The YWCA will work toward the elimination of racism
wherever it exists and by any means necessary.
