Specialized Advocate for Children (Residential)

The YWCA West Central Michigan, an organization committed to eliminating racism and empowering women is seeking a full-time Specialized Advocate for children and families residing in our domestic violence emergency shelter and our transitional housing program.

Salary Range – $34,100 – $38,328 (up to $41,777 if bilingual in Spanish)

General Summary of Responsibilities

Under general supervision, with a primary focus on custodial parents and children experiencing domestic violence and living at Sojourner House emergency shelter, provides child-focused services in the forms of emotional support, supportive counseling, education, guidance, advocacy, modeling and resource linkages. Coordinates with other child activities at shelter to ensure maximum recovery benefit for children participating.  Sojourner House emergency shelter is not a handicap accessible building.


Bachelor’s degree in human service or related field and minimal three years’ experience working with child development, trauma, and domestic or sexual violence.

Additional Information

Applicants must have demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.  Applicant must be a “self-starter”, and possess excellent record-keeping, customer service, written and oral communication and organization skills.  Efficient computer skills is necessary.  The individual in this position must also have a valid Michigan driver’s license and reliable transportation.  Applicants must exhibit a high level of energy, a positive attitude, strong attention to detail and professionalism. Hours of employment are primarily in the afternoon and evening. Capable of communicating with individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
